Car Seats

This post is stemming from a little voice in my head that will not leave me alone. I want people to comment with their opinion on the subject (please).

Twice a year I have to take continuing education classes for work. I took one in the fall that would manage to haunt me for months and months to come. The subject at hand was car seats. It was not a debate, no one gave their opinion, but the statement went like this:

"Car seats are called car seats for a reason. They are just that. Seats for the car. People have lost the definition over the years, and use them for carrying their babies, letting them nap in them....etc...etc. Babies are meant to be held. Bouncing a baby off of your leg in a heavy car seat with their head banging back and forth is not meant to be. Babies get flat heads in the back from too much time spent in their car seat. Leave your car seat in the car where it belongs."

I don't know about you, but I did carry my first 2 children around in their car seats. I let them sleep in them. I had a snap-and -go-stroller. I also had (have) travel systems where the car seat clips right into the stroller. Then there was this statement, and then there is Bella. Her car seat hasn't left my car since it was clipped in. I take her out everywhere we go. It's not always going to work out, but I'm guessing for the most part, it will. This is all stemming from a statement made by a stranger. An opinion I suppose. Isn't it funny how some things can hit you like a ton of bricks, and other things you can just let roll?

What do you think?

P.S.- Both of my car seat toting babies are bright and beautiful with perfectly round heads.

Both of my children were carseat babies. They are great, and quite frankly it was the only way to make it work when I had things to do and places to go.
Today it is okay to have your baby sleep on their backs, tomorrow it will be on their bellies.....only breast milk babies get immune to things flying around, formula babies don't bond....blah, blah, blah, I can't keep up!
Personally, I think you have to do what works best for you and the baby.

I took the carseat everywhere I went.. It was easiler then trying to get one toddler out of the car and in a store while holding a baby. Also all my kids took some of their longest naps in a carseat. To this day Callaway will crawl into his old seat and take a nap.....

Oooooooh. Interesting post! Here's what I have to say:
I have a little girl that fights sleep. If she is tired - she does not want to go to sleep - and she screams! A lot! (Love her to death though!)
Now if I get home and she is asleep in her carseat (mind you, it doesn't happen often) you can better believe I'm not taking her out! :)
My first was also a sleep fighter. He slept in his carseat until he was about 8 months old. No flat head...

ok, i will try to leave another comment!!! as for me and this is my opinion on just about anything that has to do with parenting and being a mommy! you have to do what is best for you, your baby and the rest of your family. if that means baby is in carseat, so be it! for me, personally, i did a little bit of both. since i have had 4, i will tell you about #4...i tried to get her out and wear her in the sling as much as possible. there were times when she was asleep and i needed her to stay asleep so she stayed in the seat. i think there is a point where a baby can be left in a seat way too long or too much. and i think there can be some potential risks to that.

do what works best for you and your baby!!! you are an awesome mommy! i know you will do that!!!
